5 Classic 'Unfilmable' Books That Should Never Get Adapted Into Movies

These are uniquely suited to the literary medium for good reason

Some literary classics have managed to beat the “unadaptable” curse. Frank Herbert’s Dune is a key example, along with Stanisław Lem’s Solaris and Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. “If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed,” said director Stanley Kubrick — a statement that has proven to be true in the hands of competent filmmakers.

That said, some classic books should never be turned into films. This has less to do with their “unfilmable” nature. Some stories simply lose their essence as soon as they’re translated to another medium. All prose relies on internal narrative logic, but some use experimental formats or themes that only work well on the page. Take Fyodor Dostoevsky’s White Nights. It's a riveting short story about a young man’s loneliness in Saint Petersburg that loses all of its charm as soon as it’s dramatized. (Many have tried, but none have captured the story's distinct mood.)

With that in mind, here are five classic books that should never be adapted into movies.

1 House of Leaves (2000) by Mark Z. Danielewski

Mark Z. Danielewski works with a metanarrative in his subversive House of Leaves, a tactile reading experience that cannot be replicated on film. The book doubles as an academic text about a fictional documentary film known as The Navidson Record, with the manuscript being edited by a man named Johnny Truant. This manuscript is filled with footnotes and anecdotes from Truant himself, some containing text that needs to be rotated to be read. House of Leaves uses convoluted layouts and chaotic formatting to tell its layered story. Some pages sport only a single word, while others feature messy overlaps to the point of being unreadable.

These confusing elements serve a purpose, as House of Leaves deliberately subverts literary traditions to take the reader on a wild journey. There’s little objectivity here. We’re meant to question Truant’s deteriorating mental state, his complex relationship with the original manuscript, and the added annotations by professional editors that tie everything together. A film adaptation, no matter how well-made, would’ve compromised this wonderful subjectivity, and much of the nuance would be completely lost.

2 Blood Meridian (1985) by Cormac McCarthy

A classic example of an “unfilmable” book, Blood Meridian is rich with historical context and a brand of extreme violence that’s tricky to translate into film. McCarthy’s magnum opus features poetic prose that would require radical simplification for the sake of any adaptation, becoming defanged in the process. Set in the American frontier, the book follows an unnamed teenager named The Kid who encounters a mercenary at the start of his adventure and assists him in crimes.

This is just the beginning of relentless violence. The book is chock-full of historical atrocities and massacres, including those carried out by the notorious Glanton gang. It is not impossible to portray abstract villains on film, but the primary antagonist of Blood Meridian is more of a concept than a man. The embodiment of Gnostic evil reads better as a character in a book than a traditional antagonist. Moreover, McCarthy’s sprawling saga lacks a conventional plot structure. The beauty and horror lie in the stunningly evocative prose, along with the little details that don’t lead up to tangible events.

3 Infinite Jest (1996) by David Foster Wallace

Yet another classic with a radically unconventional narrative structure, Infinite Jest would make for an inaccessible film. Much like House of Leaves, David Foster Wallace’s 1996 novel is inundated with footnotes (nearly 400!) and extensive endnotes that are integral to our understanding of this encyclopedic novel. The book is set in a dystopian future where the United States, Canada, and Mexico have come together as a superstate known as the Organization of North American Nations. The rest is a vast landscape of interwoven narratives, including a group of radicals planning a violent coup and the intricate nuances of the Incandenza family.

Sprawling length and scope aside, Infinite Jest is chock-full of internal monologues, where we dwell on character anxieties or mindsets instead of a linear narrative where point A leads to point B. What’s more, the title, Infinite Jest, is a fictional film that is so entertaining that it robs the viewer of the will to take care of their basic needs. This ironic MacGuffin fuels some conflicts within the plot, while functioning as an allegory for corporate-driven media consumption, which is the antithesis of art. Any attempts to adapt Infinite Jest would have to be both ambitious and sincere, and embody a willingness to reject traditional three-act structures.

4 No Longer Human (1948) by Osamu Dazai

No Longer Human has already been adapted several times on film and television, alongside anime and manga. The reasoning is rather simple: It is a relatable story about a troubled individual who has struggled with alienation all his life. Although Osamu Dazai’s acclaimed novel has had meaningful adaptations, attempts to dramatize the story on the screen leave much to be desired. The melancholy evoked by the book stems from the confessional nature of the notebooks left by Yozo Oba, who details his fear of human society to a deeply uncomfortable level. Simply verbalizing those thoughts through narration doesn’t do the story justice.

Yozo perceives himself as a dysfunctional human being. To hide this ugly sentiment, he masks his loneliness with a jester’s persona, appearing eccentric and jovial in social spaces. It is difficult to portray such extremes on film, as Yozo’s existence feels suffocating on paper, mirroring the real-life circumstances surrounding the author. Without this crucial context, No Longer Human feels flat and one-dimensional, reading as an indulgent fictional account of a tormented soul whose actions are romanticized. It also defies a traditional arc for the protagonist, as Yozo drifts through various stages of life with an increasing sense of social ineptitude and alienation that is too visceral to capture on film.

5 Gravity’s Rainbow (1973) by Thomas Pynchon

Thomas Pynchon divides Gravity’s Rainbow into four parts, setting the narrative in Europe at the end of World War II amid the production of V-2 rockets by the German military. While this pseudo-historical setting seems viable for an adaptation, Gravity’s Rainbow is only meant to be read for unique reasons. Pynchon doesn’t follow rules related to subplots. Characters completely vanish from the story sometimes, and tangents become increasingly disconnected and unpredictable. Adapting it as a straightforward spy thriller would mean robbing the audience of the original’s brilliance. That said, a more faithful interpretation would mean a film that fails to retain audience interest without an immediate hook.

Apart from challenges relating to form, the contents of the novel aren’t easy to recreate. The book features a huge ensemble cast of characters spread across Europe, where some even appear in dream sequences and hallucinations (or alternate historical paths). Some themes are extremely graphic and unsuited for the cinematic medium, and Gravity’s Rainbow deliberately oscillates between disparate tones to induce whiplash. This is one of the most ambitious postmodern novels for a reason, arguably the most seminal literary text since James Joyce’s Ulysses (Don't even get me started on that one.)
