Reddit Will Soon Require You to Be Logged In, Likely Because of AI Overviews
Over the years, Reddit has become almost the default message board for most of the internet and, as such, houses answers to thousands of questions that anyone could access, even without an account. However, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has suggested that most of Reddit will end up locked behind a login screen.
In a post titled "About that login screen," Huffman talks about his decision to turn Reddit into a "primarily logged-in experience." In true Reddit fashion, he includes a TL;DR, where he says, "We’re making the change because it’s better for user experience, better for our ads business, is more in line with safety regulations, and more protective of Reddit data. And we can do this while continuing to ensure user privacy." But I suspect that this all leads back to Google's AI overviews.
The first section of Huffman's long post is all about personalization, and it sounds like Reddit is going to use your account to build a personal algorithm, which will show you more of the content that you're interested in. That is extremely normal for any website in 2026. According to the post, "Our goal is to help you find what’s most relevant to you and drive the community, connection and belonging that makes Reddit, Reddit."

In the next section, Huffman says a big part of the decision is to "protect our business and meet regulations."
He clarifies, saying, "The first is that access to Reddit's data corpus has to be intentional. Today, the vast majority of unauthorized access to Reddit (basically the scraping and stealing of Reddit’s data) happens through our logged-out experiences. We will continue licensing our corpus intentionally, but those commercial deals come with guardrails that protect our users and our business. Any commercial deals give us the right to say what the data can and can't be used for and how it's presented. Without those guardrails and that intentionality, we can't control who has access to Reddit data, where things go or what they're used for."
It's not hard to see why Reddit would want to combat unauthorized scraping of its content. I know I've Googled questions I've needed answers to, only to get a bunch of answers in Google's AI overview that are essentially ripped straight from Reddit. It's in Reddit's best interest, then, to stop that from happening.
In a letter shared with shareholders, Huffman said that "our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter. The biggest impact was on logged-out and web traffic." Specifically, Huffman says, "During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week." And it doesn't take much of a stretch to connect that to AI overviews.
However, it does seem like there will be some limitations to Reddit's logged-in-only experience. According to the blog, the front page of Reddit will still be accessible without logging in, and you should be able to click on a direct Reddit link shared from a friend, and access that thread. But I get the impression that this system is still in the very early days, and the details of how exactly it'll work will emerge in the next few months.
Huffman says the next step will be "to test this in select markets outside the U.S. in the coming months." Based on those tests, Reddit will likely decide which content is going to be available for the general audience and which content is going to be walled off behind an account.
This isn't the first time in recent years that Reddit has drastically changed the way the website is run. Just last year, Reddit changed its mod removal policy after Huffman suggested the company would do so back in 2023. In the same year, Reddit also made access to its API for third-party apps more expensive.
