10 Essential Fantasy Books You Need to Read at Least Once in Your Life

The fantasy novels everyone should read at least once

Fantasy has always offered a way to step beyond the boundaries of reality, inviting readers into worlds where the impossible becomes part of everyday life. The genre stretches back to ancient folklore, epic poetry, and fairy tales, existing long before the modern fantasy novel took shape, in which sorcery and magical worlds abound. From the mythological journeys of Homer to the dreamlike stories of George MacDonald, imaginative literature has continually found new ways to explore humanity through the extraordinary.

Over time, foundational authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Terry Pratchett expanded the boundaries of the genre, crafting timeless epics that redefined what speculative fiction could even look like. Works like The Once and Future King, The Fifth Season, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell showcase the immense thematic range and literary ambition of modern fantasy.

But what makes a great fantasy novel essential? It isn't merely world-building or magic systems; it’s the rare ability to shatter our assumptions about storytelling, reshape the genre in its image, and echo across generations. The following 10 masterworks represent the pinnacle of fantasy literature, featuring a diverse range of books every reader should experience at least once before they die.

10 The Neverending Story (1979) by Michael Ende

The Neverending Story is a reminder that the greatest fantasy adventures often begin with a simple act of curiosity, which ironically starts with a book in this case. When Bastian Balthazar Bux comes upon a mysterious novel, he becomes immersed in Fantastica, a world threatened by a dangerous and malignant force known as the Nothing. As the boundary between spectator and hero begins to dissolve, Bastian realizes that saving this fragile realm depends entirely on his own capacity to dream.

Michael Ende understood that imagination can be both a refuge and a responsibility, turning a simple escape from reality into something deeply personal. The Neverending Story blurs the boundaries between reader and story in ways few fantasy novels manage, exploring the dangers of losing oneself in a world of your own making. Beneath its colorful creatures and extraordinary landscapes lies a thoughtful meditation on the stories we tell ourselves and how they can shape our identity, capturing the transformative power of reading that few books have mustered since.

9 The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006) by Scott Lynch

Fantasy doesn't always need ancient prophecies, world-ending wars, or chosen-one heroes destined to save the day. Sometimes, all it needs is a clever thief with an elaborate scheme and absolutely no intention of playing by the rules. That’s how Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora recontextualizes the classic approach to fantasy. The story follows the Gentleman Bastards, a band of con artists who prey on the wealthy citizens of Camorr, a city whose Venetian-inspired streets are filled with political intrigue and criminal enterprise. Locke himself is a master manipulator, but his elaborate deceptions become increasingly dangerous when a mysterious figure threatens to upend everything he has built.

Lynch does a fantastic job of balancing razor-sharp dialogue and intricate plotting with a world that feels both dangerous and endlessly entertaining. For readers who prefer their fantasy with a criminal touch, elaborate cons, and characters who survive through wit rather than brute strength, The Lies of Locke Lamora is essential reading.

8 The Last Unicorn (1968) by Peter S. Beagle

There is a quiet heartbreak at the core of The Last Unicorn, a novel that understands a creature's magic is inseparable from the tragedy of its potential loss. Peter S. Beagle follows a unicorn who discovers she may be the last of her kind and sets out to find the others, embarking on a journey filled with eccentric companions and dangerous magic, the hallmarks of a great fantasy tale. Her search eventually drives her toward the malevolent King Haggard and the fearsome Red Bull, where uncovering the truth about her species requires risking her immortality.

What makes the novel so enduring is Beagle's willingness to look beyond the familiar comforts of fairy tales. His prose is playful and poetic, but there's a melancholy running beneath the adventure that gives every encounter monumental weight. It’s why The Last Unicorn feels like a story about the painful passage of time. It's proof that fantasy can be enchanting without sacrificing the emotional complexity that makes its stories linger long after the final page.

7 The Last Wish (1993) by Andrzej Sapkowski

Before Geralt of Rivia became a household name through video games and television, Andrzej Sapkowski introduced readers to a monster hunter whose greatest challenge isn't always the monstrous creatures he encounters. First published in 1993, The Last Wish collects interconnected stories that establish the foundations of The Witcher, drawing from European folklore while gleefully dismantling the conventions of traditional fairy tales. Here, familiar legends take on unexpected detours, princesses mutate into gory monsters, and the distinction between humanity and monstrosity is considerably harder to establish.

Geralt's profession demands that he navigate these moral ambiguities, often discovering that the people paying him are far more dangerous and ugly than the beasts he has been hired to kill. Sapkowski's sharp dialogue and dark humor give the collection a personality all its own. For anyone interested in fantasy that questions its own mythology, The Last Wish remains an excellent starting point. And with The Witcher 4 just around the corner, now is the perfect time to dive into Sapkowski's literary world.

6 Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1985) by Haruki Murakami

There aren’t many fantasy novels that feel quite as disorienting as Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. Like many of Murakami’s stories, it’s one that seems determined to keep its readers guessing about the nature of reality itself. Alternating between two seemingly unrelated worlds, Hard-Boiled Wonderland juxtaposes a futuristic Tokyo filled with secretive organizations against a strange, walled town where a man must surrender his shadow to read dreams. As these narratives gradually converge, Murakami inevitably showcases the fragile boundaries that separate identity from imagination, charting how the protagonist’s physical self in Tokyo edges toward irreversible brain death.

Murakami’s fusion of cybernetic noir, surrealism, and dreamlike fantasy makes Hard-Boiled Wonderland an unorthodox choice for an essential fantasy list, but that’s exactly why it belongs. Rather than providing easy answers, the novel asks readers to surrender to its mysteries and ponder what remains of identity when memory is stripped away. It’s a thoughtful meditation on solitude, told through a distinct Japanese perspective that’s fitting for every fan of fantasy literature.

5 A Wizard of Earthsea (1968) by Ursula K. Le Guin

Magic has rarely felt as meaningful as it does in Ursula K. Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea, the foundational masterpiece that launched her iconic Earthsea Cycle. The novel follows Ged, a gifted young wizard whose pride leads him to unleash a terrible shadow upon the world, forcing him to confront the consequences of his own hubris. Ged’s journey turns into a desperate cat-and-mouse quest that takes him across a vast archipelago of isolated islands, ancient dragon-lords, and forgotten traditions as he pursues — and is pursued by — the very shadow he unleashed.

All the while, Le Guin spends time expertly detailing the ecology of magic itself, a system governed by the power of "true names" and the delicate balance of the cosmos. Ged's journey is not about conquering an external villain, but accepting his own darkness, setting a template for coming-of-age fantasy that is both mythic and deeply intimate. Its philosophical wisdom makes it an indispensable cornerstone of the genre.

4 The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath (1943) by H.P. Lovecraft

If fantasy is the art of imagining worlds beyond our own, few writers ventured into stranger territory than H. P. Lovecraft. Although better known for cosmic horror, Lovecraft’s The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath makes a compelling case for itself as one of the most singular achievements in surreal fantasy. Published posthumously in 1943, the tale follows Randolph Carter as he journeys through the Dreamlands in search of a magnificent city he has glimpsed in his dreams. Along the way, Carter encounters bizarre civilizations, terrifying creatures, and landscapes that seem to obey a logic entirely their own.

Lovecraft's fascination with cosmic horror is evident throughout, yet this sprawling novella is also a remarkable exercise in imaginative worldbuilding, drawing together elements of mythology, dark fantasy, and surreal adventure. Its dreamlike narrative can be disorienting, but that's part of its appeal. Rather than offering a familiar quest with clearly defined rules and antagonists, Lovecraft creates a universe that feels ancient, unknowable, and indifferent to human understanding. It's an essential detour into fantasy's darker corners put forth by one of horror literature’s most acclaimed visionaries.

3 Weaveworld (1987) by Clive Barker

Clive Barker has always understood that the most extraordinary fantasy worlds can exist just beyond the edges of everyday life. In Weaveworld, that simple idea takes shape in the Fugue, a wonderfully bizarre realm home to the magical Seerkind, woven into the fabric of an ordinary Persian carpet. When its hidden inhabitants face destruction from a ruthless ancient enemy, the fate of their world becomes entangled with two unsuspecting humans thrust into a fight for survival.

Approaching fantasy with the sensibilities of a horror master, Barker infuses the story with grotesque creatures, unsettling transformations, and a brand of magic that feels as perilous as it is mesmerizing. Beneath these nightmarish textures, however, beats a genuine devotion to the transformative power of imagination. By daring to venture into the visceral, the sensual, and the surreal, Weaveworld stands in stark contrast to traditional sword-and-sorcery stories, proving that fantasy is often at its most magical when it refuses to play it safe.

2 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll

More than 160 years after its publication, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland remains one of the strangest and most influential journeys in fantasy literature. Author Lewis Carroll sends his young protagonist tumbling into a world where familiar rules have collapsed, allowing mundane conversations to spiral into absurdity and simple questions become impossible to answer. From the perpetually hurried White Rabbit to the enigmatic Cheshire Cat and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts, Wonderland is populated by characters who seem to delight in challenging Alice's understanding of the world.

Underneath his literary pen name, Carroll was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an Oxford mathematician and logician whose deep understanding of formal proofs directly inspired the strict mathematical puzzles and inverted reason that govern Wonderland. That’s why the nonsense works, because it’s built on strict logic. Through wordplay, mathematical riddles, and iconic set pieces like the Caucus-Race where everyone wins or a game of croquet played with live flamingos the narrative systematically dismantles adult authority and etiquette. Alice’s attempts to apply classroom lessons to a world where a baby turns into a pig or a cat leaves its grin behind show how brittle human rules can turn under a bit of scrutiny. It remains an essential cornerstone of fantasy, demonstrating that pure playfulness can double as sharp cultural satire.

1 The Lord of the Rings (1954) by J. R. R. Tolkien

Published across three volumes between 1954 and 1955, J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings stands as fantasy’s most unforgettable tale. It follows Frodo Baggins and his companions in their attempt to destroy the One Ring, an artifact whose corrupting power threatens to plunge Middle-earth into darkness. Building directly upon the quieter adventures of The Hobbit, where Bilbo Baggins first unwittingly claimed the fateful ring from Gollum, Tolkien expands a simple fairy tale into a vast mythic saga of fellowship, war, and the tragic burden of unintended heroism.

Tolkien's achievement extends far beyond its central quest. Through ancient histories, invented languages, intricate mythology, and cultures with distinct identities, he creates a world that feels as though it existed long before the reader arrived. The story's enduring power primarily comes from its overarching theme: a belief that courage can emerge from the smallest and most unlikely individuals. Battles and grand adventures might have their place, but the burden of doing what is right alongside one’s true friends defines the journey. For anyone seeking to understand modern fantasy, Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings remains the blueprint from which nearly all speculative fiction continues to draw.
