15 Years Later, Doctor Who's Darkest Matt Smith Episode Still Has the Greatest Twist
The real end of Amy's arc came long before 'Angels Take Manhattan'
Toward the end of Matt Smith’s second season in the TARDIS, Doctor Who traps him with Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), and a small group of random people inside a nightmarish hotel with a huge, muscly minotaur. Each room in the hotel contains a different person’s greatest fear. There are abusive parents, cackling ventriloquist dummies, a scary gorilla, and something the Doctor fears so much that we’re not even allowed to see it.
“The God Complex,” which first aired almost exactly 15 years ago, isn’t the scariest TV episode of Doctor Who ever, but it’s up there. It has that unsettling quality many episodes have where the TARDIS crew is suddenly trapped somewhere with no idea how they got there. And because the layout of this hotel is constantly changing, they can’t find the TARDIS to escape either. The only way out is through, and the consequences of this episode are far more profound than most fans seem to remember.
Amy and Rory don’t leave the show until the following season in the heartbreaking “The Angels Take Manhattan” storyline, but in a very prominent thematic sense, their journey — and Amy’s personal arc in particular — ends with “The God Complex.”
The Doctor finally recognizes what traveling with him costs
It’s nearly impossible to talk about “The God Complex” without also considering the episode that came right before it, “The Girl Who Waited.”
The Doctor takes Amy and Rory to Apalapucia, a paradise planet where visitors can observe terminally ill loved ones living out their remaining lives in accelerated time streams. A mistake separates Amy from the others, and by the time Rory reaches her, she has spent 36 years alone inside the facility, fending off medical robots with a samurai sword. She’s also spent all that time resenting the Doctor for failing to rescue her. In the end, the Doctor is able to save the younger Amy, but it also means erasing the other one. The Doctor leaves the choice in Rory’s hands because two Amys cannot exist. Rory and the older Amy then say goodbye through the door of the TARDIS, professing their love through tears. It’s a grim reminder that sooner or later, something terrible tends to happen to each of the Doctor’s companions.
“The Girl Who Waited” forces them all to reckon with how inhuman and coldly logical the Doctor can be, making difficult decisions that, at times, doom entire civilizations. However, there's not much time to process. “The God Complex” opens immediately with the trio already in the hotel and confused about how they got there, no doubt with the trauma of Apalapucia lingering in their minds. “The Girl Who Waited” undermines the faith that Amy and Rory have in the Doctor. “The God Complex” makes it the entire point.
Along with our heroes, there’s a motley crew of random people, including one alien, already trapped in the hotel. One by one, each discovers their personal nightmare room, then they enter a peaceful trance, begin praising the minotaur, and eagerly allow it to kill them. Everybody makes the easy assumption that this creature feeds on fear, but the Doctor eventually realizes that fear is just the delivery mechanism.
Presumably, many people only pray to God as a last-ditch resort when their life is in danger, and Doctor Who transforms that feeling of spiritual desperation into a sci-fi mechanic. Because when someone confronts their greatest fear, they retreat into whatever faith they have that sustains them. The creature is actually using fear to access and feed upon that faith. It’s more than a little weird and doesn’t really feel as interesting or as profound as Doctor Who wants it to. Nonetheless, “The God Complex” remains hugely poignant because of how it grapples with Amy’s faith in particular.
Amy’s unshakable faith in the Doctor has defined nearly her entire life. A strange, raggedy man crashed into her garden when she was just a child, inspected a weird crack in her wall, and then promised to return in a few minutes. Then he came back 12 years later, long after everyone had convinced her that she made the whole thing up. In many ways, Amy forever remained that little girl who waited. Ever since she stepped into the TARDIS, her life became the fairy tale she dreamed of for years. For this strange minotaur alien, Amy’s faith in the Doctor is the most delicious treat of all.
Amy’s room contains her younger self, sitting atop a suitcase and waiting endlessly.
The Doctor cannot save her by waving his sonic screwdriver to defeat another monster. He has to destroy her belief in him. In a brisk and crushing scene, the Doctor admits he knew that traveling with him would eventually place her in mortal danger and confesses that his motives were never entirely altruistic: “I took you with me because I was vain,” he says. “Because I wanted to be adored.”
Despite playing the silliest version of the Doctor to ever exist, Matt Smith delivers monologues like this with gravity, intensity, and tenderness. Underneath the fez hats, bowties, and goofy grin, there’s something almost sinister about him. The Doctor genuinely loves Amy, but he also loves being the impossible hero she worships. We’re led to see the deliberate parallels between the minotaur and the Doctor, and he decides it’s time to stop feeding on that worship.
“Amy Williams,” he tells her. “It’s time to stop waiting.”
It’s a small detail perhaps, to call her by her adult name, but the Doctor has always thought of her as young Amelia Pond. Even earlier in “The God Complex,” he referred to Amy and Rory as “assembled Ponds.” But the minotaur made him realize how dangerous his relationship with them has become.
“The God Complex” gives Amy her real ending
The episode could end there, with another monster defeated and another adventure complete. Instead, the Doctor takes Amy and Rory back to Earth and gives them a house, a car, and the keys to an ordinary future. Their next adventure is simply living a normal life as a married couple.
The two remaining season 6 episodes operate more like an extended finale than a restoration of the old status quo. “Closing Time” sends the Doctor on a farewell tour without Amy and Rory, while “The Wedding of River Song” draws them into an enormous confrontation built around his death as a fixed point in time. Those episodes complete the season’s larger story, but “The God Complex” has already completed the emotional one.
The Ponds return for a few season 7 outings, but it’s always the Doctor dropping into their lives to take them on scattered adventures before returning them home. Even their iconic departure in “The Angels Take Manhattan” begins as a fun little vacation to New York City before a Weeping Angel permanently separates them.
“The Angels Take Manhattan” might be Amy Pond’s final episode, but “The God Complex” is the last time we see the girl who waited. Fifteen years later, it remains one of Smith’s most iconic performances: the moment his Doctor realizes that saving Amy means letting her live a life without him in it.
