All 8 Dungeon Crawler Carl Books Ranked (by Their Goodreads Score)

Try not to die

Matt Dinniman's Dungeon Crawler Carl takes one of fantasy's oldest setups and throws it into a blender with reality television, apocalyptic horror, and video game logic, creating a series that has evolved into one of the biggest breakout hits in modern speculative fiction. The premise is fairly simple, starting with a fight for survival inside an alien-dominated game show that escalates into a sprawling saga of bizarre monsters, convoluted mechanics, and a talking cat with an ego to match.

Beneath all of its bloodshed and absurdity, however, lies a surprisingly heartfelt story about survival in a system designed to exploit its participants, not unlike James Dashner’s The Maze Runner and Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. With eight books in the series, there's plenty of dungeon crawling to rank. Goodreads scores offer a useful snapshot of which adventures have resonated most with readers, but with every book holding a rating well above 4.3 stars, you won't find a single dud in this franchise.

As fans eagerly await the ninth installment’s release next year, which Dinniman calls the first half of his planned two-part series conclusion, now is the perfect moment to look back at how the crawl has scored so far. Here's every Dungeon Crawler Carl book ranked by its Goodreads score.

8 Book 3: The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook

Goodreads Rating: 4.37

Of all the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook is the one most likely to test readers' patience, but that's not to say the third installment is a disappointment. Far from it. Book three introduces readers to the Fourth Floor, which plunges Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s obnoxious cat, Donut, into the Iron Tangle, a nightmarish subway system where navigating the maze of trains, stations, and monsters can feel almost as grueling to the reader as it does for the crawlers.

The complicated geography is central to the challenge, but it also makes this installment more mechanically demanding than its predecessors. Still, Carl and Donut's increasingly desperate attempts to survive the Fourth Floor, alongside the introduction of greater cooperation between crawlers, make for compelling reading. Its comparatively lower score when set against the entire series reflects a divisive setting, not a lack of imagination.

7 Book 1: Dungeon Crawler Carl

Goodreads Rating: 4.42

Every great dungeon crawl needs a compelling reason to keep descending, and Dinniman's debut delivers one of the strangest imaginable. After an apocalyptic event transforms Earth into a deadly, televised game show, Carl finds himself fighting for survival alongside his ex-girlfriend's unusually opinionated feline, Princess Donut. It’s a gleefully unhinged blend of LitRPG mechanics, gruesome monsters, and reality television satire.

While clearly not ranked among his finest, there's a refreshing simplicity to this first outing, before the mythology and cast grow considerably more complicated. Carl and Donut's partnership is the real draw in this first episode, giving the carnage an emotional anchor as they fight for survival across the first two floors. Its lower placement is hardly a stain on its reputation; it simply reflects how much more ambitious the series has grown since its inception.

6 Book 2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario

Goodreads Rating: 4.46

A sequel can easily fall into the trap of adding more spectacle and worldbuilding without making anything in the story truly resonate. Thankfully, Carl's Doomsday Scenario captures the appeal of this series by throwing Carl and Donut onto the lethal Over-the-Land wilderness of the Third Floor, where goblin sappers, siege engines, and unhinged holiday-themed boss encounters force Carl to turn every absurd item in his inventory into a high-yield trap. As the pair fight through the open-world terrain, the stakes rise alongside the show's growing interest in its most entertaining contestants.

The expanding world gives Dinniman more room to explore the cruel machinery behind the spectacle, revealing how the show's cosmic corporate sponsors manipulate the rules to maximize viewer engagement at the expense of human life. Amidst the mounting absurdity, Carl's pragmatic resourcefulness remains a highlight, as does Donut's rapid evolution from pampered house cat to scene-stealing diva. A 4.46 rating suggests readers are firmly on board, even if later installments deliver more elaborate dungeon designs and payoffs.

5 Book 4: The Gate of the Feral Gods

Goodreads Rating: 4.52

By the time Carl and Donut reach the Fifth Floor, surviving the dungeon has become a much more complicated proposition than simply killing whatever gets in their way. The Gate of the Feral Gods takes the series' penchant for elaborate environments and pushes it even further, delivering another sprawling challenge that demands creative problem-solving as much as brute force.

The increasingly interconnected cast also helps the adventure feel larger than Carl and Donut's predicament. As the pair build out a broader network of allies and fellow crawlers, the emotional stakes rise beyond simple individual survival. Dinniman has a knack for making seemingly absurd game mechanics, like complex deity favor systems and brutal environmental hazards, feel genuinely consequential to the plot, a skill especially apparent throughout the Fifth Floor. Its 4.52 score puts it comfortably above the early books, reflecting how much the narrative expands once the world starts to truly open up.

4 Book 8: A Parade of Horribles

Goodreads Rating: 4.60

Eight books deep into the crawl, the novelty of watching Carl and Donut navigate a lethal cosmic game show should, by all rights, be wearing thin. Instead, A Parade of Horribles proves that Dinniman still has infinite mileage left in this absurd universe. The eighth and latest installment plunges Carl and Donut onto the Tenth Floor, the notorious Sheol, where the crawl transitions into a full-scale galactic war. Carl must manage massive troop movements and political betrayals while facing grotesque flesh-warping curses that threaten his very sanity. Every choice carries staggering galactic consequences, turning what used to be a dungeon run into an all-out revolution against the Syndicate.

By this point in the series, readers aren't just tuning in for clever mechanical exploits or ridiculous boss fights, but are deeply tethered to Carl’s fracturing psyche, Donut's emotional maturity, and the looming collapse of the system itself. While it might bear a 4.60 rating, it’s a minor statistical dip compared to the adjacent fan favorites, but that is purely a symptom of an audience with sky-high expectations. In reality, the eighth book still stands as a triumphant milestone that should garner even more love once book nine drops next year.

3 Book 6: The Eye of the Bedlam Bride

Goodreads Rating: 4.62

The sixth Dungeon Crawler Carl novel is a reminder that the dungeon's most frightening monsters aren't necessarily the ones with the sharpest teeth. The Eye of the Bedlam Bride sends Carl and Donut into another elaborate trial, but the series' growing mythology and increasingly dangerous circumstances give the adventure an especially unsettling edge.

Continuing to balance the gleefully grotesque with genuine tension, Dinniman ensures that the jokes never entirely soften the horror of what the crawlers must endure. The result is an installment that feels more emotionally loaded than the early books, even as its elaborate mechanics and sprawling cast demand more from the reader. At 4.62, its score reflects that success, though its complexity may keep book six from feeling as immediately satisfying as the best entries.

2 Book 7: This Inevitable Ruin

Goodreads Rating: 4.66

Few series can sustain their momentum across seven increasingly massive installments, but This Inevitable Ruin makes a persuasive case that Dungeon Crawler Carl is just gaining steam at the end of its run. The seventh book pushes the overarching conflict toward a new level of intensity, drawing on the alliances, rivalries, and hard-won knowledge that have accumulated throughout Carl and Donut's lengthy ordeal.

Dinniman’s greatest strength has always been his ability to make the dungeon's ridiculous spectacle feel consequential, and This Inevitable Ruin pushes that gift to its absolute limit. Beneath the grotesque humor, inventive tactical combat, and sheer cosmic absurdity lies a devastating story about human survival inside an oppressive system designed to monetize suffering. As the rules break down and the rebellion spills far past the dungeon walls, readers are rewarded for their long-term investment with an apocalyptic gauntlet where every victory carries a crushing cost.

1 Book 5: The Butcher's Masquerade

Goodreads Rating: 4.67

If Goodreads readers have a unanimous favorite, it’s The Butcher’s Masquerade. The fifth book drops Carl and Princess Donut onto the Ninth Floor for the feared Celestial Masquerade — a warlord-style battleground where high-ranking galactic sponsors and hunters enter the zone to actively butcher crawlers for sport. Between the faction warfare, the horrific ”Hunting Parties,” and the tragic loss of long-time fan-favorite allies, Dinniman turns up the emotional meatgrinder to maximum velocity. Carl’s desperate tactics reach legendary heights here, culminating in a jaw-dropping climax that proves the show's elite audience is no longer safe from the monster they created.

Dinniman has spent four books refining his blend of game-inspired problem-solving, outrageous comedy, and genuine emotional investment, and here those elements come together with remarkable confidence. The sprawling adventure feels like a reward for readers who have followed Carl's increasingly desperate fight for survival, while the series' supporting cast adds further texture to the chaos. Its 4.67 rating is a testament to its status as the series' pinnacle, albeit by the narrowest of margins.
