Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Shows Off Its Reimagined Superboss Battles in New Trailer
Like Meteor, the remake trilogy's finale gets closer every day
Square Enix has shared new information on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's boss fights during Gamescom Opening Night Live. The highly-anticipated finale to the remake trilogy of the legendary RPG that began in 2020, is set to be released in spring 2027.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation game director Naoki Hamaguchi took the stage to reveal more about the trilogy's climactic conclusion. The new trailer focused heavily on the game's Weapons, extremely challenging optional bosses from the original game. Rufus Shinra describes them as "towering monstrosities termed weapons." We then get brief glimpses of Cloud and the other party members facing down Emerald, Ruby, and Ultima Weapon. These are the game's most difficult fights and include certain constraints, like a 20-minute time limit on the Emerald Weapon fight if the player doesn't have a certain materia equipped. It will be interesting to see how Revelation adapts the unique mechanics of each Weapon fight into the real-time combat system.
What we know about Final Fantasy 7 Revelation
Square Enix officially revealed the third entry in the trilogy would be titled Revelation during Summer Game Fest earlier this year. The reveal trailer gave a quick tease of the conclusion's new systems. That includes the ability to pilot the Highwind airship around Revelation's open-world. No matter where you take the airship, you can jump out and parachute to the ground à la Fortnite in a seamless transition. Locations from Remake and Rebirth will appear alongside new areas like Wutai. Even with all the new environments to explore, Hamaguchi has assured fans that Revelation won't have the same level of content bloat as Rebirth.
According to Matt Mercer, Vincent Valentine's voice actor, the series' battle system has been "perfected" in Revelation. Both Vincent and Cid will finally become playable party members. Hamaguchi said the latter was especially tricky to deal with considering in the original game he can kind of be a jerk. Combat will also include the trilogy's hardest fights, pitting players against the threatening Weapons. The Gold Saucer is back as well, becoming a hub for more Queen's Blood.

As for how Revelation will conclude the series, Hamaguchi has said the development team didn't change any plans based on player feedback. The team had a pretty clear vision for the series from the beginning and has stuck to it. As the remake trilogy has played around with events from the original game, players are still unsure of what twists may appear in Revelation and if Cloud and company will be able to change fate.
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be released in Spring 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
