Stranger Than Heaven Lead Says the Game Is More Serious Than Past Yakuza Games
Farewell my diaper fetishist
Stranger Than Heaven is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's most ambitious action-adventure game yet, following protagonist Makoto Daito's life in five Japanese cities over the course of five decades. I came away from a recent half-day preview of the game impressed by its lush urban environments as well as its compelling depiction of an evolving society. But having played most of RGG's Yakuza and Like a Dragon games, I did find myself wondering if Stranger Than Heaven would also incorporate their distinctive (and delightful!) sense of humor.
RGGs games have a knack for abrupt tonal shifts: one minute, Kiryu's tearfully screaming the name of his sworn brother as he dies in his arms. The next, he's recruiting a chicken named Nugget to join his real estate empire, or bringing a man with a tummyache some tissues in a public toilet. My Stranger Than Heaven demo didn't include substories or sidequests, so I asked the team if those areas of the game would include the studio's trademark sense of silliness.
Director Mikinobu Abe told Polygon they're going for a different approach with Stranger Than Heaven.
In a contemporary setting, such as in our previous titles, there are all kinds of events that can happen in everyday life that gives us a broad range of events to work with — not only in substories, but also in minigames and other side contents, from comedy to more dramatic situations, and allowed us to portray reality in more humorous and entertaining ways. However, when we began researching the eras we wanted to depict in this title, we found that the world of several decades, or even a century, ago already felt striking and unusual. The differences in values and common sense from that time are, in themselves, surprising and fascinating. So rather than deliberately creating situations solely for laughs, we felt that simply allowing players to encounter the social norms and values of the era could be an incredibly surprising experience. In that sense, rather than actively pursuing comedy, we approached this title primarily as a serious work, one that depicts the rawness and immediacy of the era. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t moments that might still make you smile.

I will admit, I'm a little sad to hear that there won't be as many strange, off-the-wall substories in Stranger Than Heaven. But having spent several hours with the game, it does make sense. Makoto's world is quite a bit harsher and closer to reality than that of Yakuza/Like a Dragon's protagonists Kiryu and Ichiban. While there's plenty of brawling, this project feels more like a historical drama than a pulpy action movie. While I won't be expecting any diaper fetishists or horny old ladies to be chasing Makoto all over town, I'm still excited to check out Stranger Than Heaven when it comes to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Jan. 15, 2027.
