11 anime to watch if you like Frieren
Find refuge in these cozy, fantastical worlds
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is unlike anything else. Madhouse’s anime adaptation of Kanehito Yamada’s manga has delivered two brilliant seasons, with a highly anticipated third season still to come. It’s difficult to fit Frieren neatly into a box: The series embraces shonen fantasy conventions, then subverts them in beautiful and moving ways. Its story considers the ephemeral nature of time, the depth of human connection, and the importance of savoring the journey itself. Although Frieren doesn’t shy away from action when the occasion demands it, the series is far more interested in quiet moments shaped by tranquility and nostalgia.
While Frieren remains singular, a handful of anime come close to capturing its laid-back atmosphere or exploring similar themes. Series like Delicious in Dungeon and The Apothecary Diaries aren’t direct analogues for Frieren, but they share its comforting spirit. Some of the following stories send their protagonists on similarly epic journeys; others linger on the warmth that develops between traveling companions. With those qualities in mind, here are 11 anime worth watching before season 3 of Frieren arrives.
11 Kino’s Journey
Kino’s Journey, an adaptation of Keiichi Sigsawa’s light novel series, is far more philosophical than it first appears. The story follows Kino, a stoic teenager traveling through strange and beautiful countries alongside a talking motorcycle named Hermes. Like Frieren, the anime centers on a long, arduous journey, while Kino similarly remains detached from much of the surrounding world. The traveler never stays anywhere for more than three days, following a self-imposed rule meant to prevent the temptation of settling down. Loneliness and pain permeate Kino’s Journey, but its brave protagonist still learns to appreciate the world’s beauty.
10 Haibane Renmei
You may already know Yoshitoshi Abe’s spectacular work on Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze, but his Haibane Renmei is a surreal 13-episode treasure. Rakka, a newly hatched angel-like being known as a “haibane,” falls from the sky before emerging from a giant cocoon. The other haibane are similarly uncertain about their lives before hatching, and Rakka gradually learns to navigate her new existence in the walled city of Glie. Haibane Renmei’s deeply melancholic tone complements its patient exploration of time and mortality, while its low-stakes atmosphere leaves room for somber moments of everyday life.
9 Natsume’s Book of Friends
An immortal being spends centuries discovering what it means to be human in Yoshitoki Ōima’s (A Silent Voice) shonen gem To Your Eternity. Fushi, a distinctly Frieren-like protagonist, begins as a mysterious white orb and gradually assumes the forms of different living things, including a white wolf. After a lonely child mistakes that wolf form for his missing pet, the two share a precious stretch of time before unimaginable tragedy strikes. To Your Eternity examines the agony of outliving mortal companions as Fushi’s emotional intelligence develops over the course of his journey. Where Frieren emphasizes the importance of cherishing fleeting bonds, To Your Eternity dwells on the devastation of loss and the ways it reshapes Fushi.
8 To Your Eternity
An immortal being spends centuries learning what it means to be human in Yoshitoki Ōima’s (A Silent Voice) shonen gem, To Your Eternity. This Frieren-like character, Fushi, was created from a mystical white orb, and over time, he takes on the forms of various lifeforms, including a stone and a white wolf. After a lonely child mistakes Fushi’s wolf form for his lost pet, the two spend precious time bonding until an unimaginable tragedy strikes. To Your Eternity dissects the pain of outliving mortal companions, and Fushi’s emotional intelligence blooms over the course of his journey. While Frieren focuses more on cherishing fleeting bonds, To Your Eternity dwells on the utter devastation of loss and how it shapes Fushi.
7 The Faraway Paladin
Stories about feral children raised by animals are nothing new in anime, appearing in works ranging from Princess Mononoke to Children of the Sea. The Faraway Paladin puts a supernatural twist on that familiar idea: A child named Will is raised in the city of the dead by three undead guardians — a skeletal warrior, a mummified priestess, and a spectral wizard. Although they care deeply for Will, they aren’t exactly experts on human life, prompting him to investigate the unusual circumstances of his upbringing. Memory becomes central to The Faraway Paladin, as Will must understand the passage of time to appreciate the gift of human experience.
6 Mushi-shi
A wandering man named Ginko is on an intriguing mission in Mushi-shi, which mimics Frieren in its deeply melancholic and atmospheric mode of storytelling. While he appears nonchalant, Ginko extends empathy to primitive creatures called Mushi, who influence human behavior like invisible parasites (similar to how curses latch on to non-sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen). That said, not all Mushi are malicious, and their existence isn’t a threat since they’ve always co-existed alongside nature. Using his profound understanding of the natural world, Ginko changes countless human lives through fleeting encounters as he works to maintain the primordial ecological balance that has sustained the Earth.
5 Girls’ Last Tour
Although Girls’ Last Tour contains no traditional fantasy elements, it views a bleak post-apocalyptic world through the eyes of two young girls exploring civilization’s ruins. Chito and Yuuri travel by half-track motorcycle in search of essentials like food and shelter, filling the hours with ordinary activities such as journaling, collecting books, and washing clothes. An ominous mood hangs over Girls’ Last Tour — the title alone tells you as much — but its sense of inevitable loss is offset by the pair’s sincere determination to find joy in the present. Along the way, Chito and Yuuri uncover relics of humanity’s past and discover beauty in discarded machinery or a long-forgotten poem.
4 Witch Hat Atelier
Magic is a double-edged sword in Kamome Shirahama’s Witch Hat Atelier, a gorgeous and deeply heartfelt fantasy anime. After an inexplicable tragedy separates a child named Coco from her mother, she begins training under the gifted witch Qifrey, who has his own reasons for accepting her as an apprentice. As she battles feelings of doubt and inadequacy, Coco discovers magic’s limitless possibilities and the painstaking work required to make those dreams real. Witch Hat Atelier may feature secretive covens and forbidden spells, but Coco’s journey is rooted in wonder and acceptance. In its fantastical world, true joy can come from sharing a meal with dear friends or soaring through a vast blue sky without fear.
3 Violet Evergarden
Violet Evergarden has little direct overlap with Frieren, but it similarly follows an emotionally detached female protagonist on a journey of self-discovery. Set after the Great War in the land of Telesis, the 13-episode anime centers on a young woman who was raised to be a ruthless weapon. After losing both arms in the final battle, Violet receives prosthetics and begins writing letters for clients as an Auto Memory Doll, essentially a professional ghostwriter. Violet Evergarden is a radical exercise in empathy, following Violet as she learns to connect with strangers’ experiences and, through them, understand her own emotions. The question “What is love?” offers no easy answers, but Violet’s quest to comprehend vulnerability in all its forms is a rewarding one.
2 Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina
A single look at the white-haired wandering mage Elaina makes the parallels between Frieren and Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina apparent. Elaina takes to the road after growing up with folk stories about the globe-trotting witch Niké. Having endured difficult trials to prove herself as a mage, Elaina embarks on a long journey that gradually deepens her understanding of human life’s transience. Unlike Frieren, Elaina is mortal, and her travels veer between the whimsical and the dangerous in ways she processes from an innately human perspective. Wandering Witch becomes an unconventional coming-of-age story in which Elaina often bears the burden of remaining a neutral observer.
