The action epic fantasy that Paramount tried it kill is a officially a global streaming smash hit

This sequel gives its major hero the closure the original series never could

The long-awaited follow-up to perhaps the single most beloved animated series of the late 2000s was supposed to be a huge theatrical event. Then in December, its wide release was canceled in favor of a straight-to-streaming release on Paramount Plus. A few months later, the entire movie leaked online following a server breach in April 2026. Fast-forward to today, mere days after its July 25 streaming release date, and it’s a massive hit on Paramount Plus as the platform’s number one movie both in the U.S. and worldwide.

For Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to get this kind of success on streaming feels particularly vindicating. Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender clearly wanted to reunite with Aang and the rest of Team Avatar nearly two decades after the curtain fell on the original series. More importantly, the movie is good enough to prove it deserved far better than the release it got. Even if you don’t have Paramount Plus, every Avatar fan needs to at least get some kind of free trial to watch Avatar Aang as soon as possible.

Avatar Aang looks stunning. Flying Bark Productions and Studio Mir expand the visual stylings of the original series into something genuinely cinematic. Every bending style feels faster, heavier, and more expressive. Every core character gets their moment to shine, using their bending in new ways we haven’t seen before. Particularly the spectacle of the final battle begs to be seen on the biggest possible screen.

It’s also just plain cool to revisit these characters as adults. Set 13 years after the defeat of Fire Lord Ozai, Avatar Aang gives us a big enough time jump for everyone to have grown into new roles in their 20s. Zuko is now the Fire Lord, but already weary of the bureaucracy associated with governing. Toph teaches metalbending at her own academy (she’s still the “greatest earthbender in the world!”). Sokka is designing new technology with students in the Southern Water Tribe. Everyone’s abilities have advanced appropriately, and even though they’ve grown up a bit, their personalities remain immediately recognizable.

The spectacle and nostalgia are enough to warrant watching Avatar Aang alone, but what makes this movie essential viewing for fans is the way it hones in on a part of Aang’s story that the original series never fully resolved.

Aang spent most of The Last Airbender trying to master the four elements so he could defeat Fire Lord Ozai and end the war. But as Team Avatar raced toward that goal, the show sometimes lost sight of the spiritual crisis embedded in its own title: Aang was the last airbender because his culture was destroyed by the Fire Nation. The 12-year-old boy who vanished from the world woke up a century later as the sole survivor of his people. He didn’t just have to save the world. He was suddenly responsible for preserving an entire culture by himself.

Avatar Aang finally gives him the time and maturity to reckon with that burden in a way that makes this feel like a Superman movie. Aang is the most powerful being in the world, but he’s also the sole survivor of his kind. This older Aang is wiser, braver, and more confident, but there’s a deep sadness beneath Eric Nam’s performance. While his friends have begun building new lives, Aang remains preoccupied with the past. He spends his time collecting Air Nomad relics and retreating to the Southern Air Temple like it’s his Fortress of Solitude.

That makes the discovery of Tagah (Dave Bautista), an ancient airbender who was also preserved in ice, feel like a miracle. For the first time since awakening from his century-long absence, Aang meets someone who understands what it means to be an Air Nomad. Tagah knows traditions and airbending techniques that were lost even before Aang’s time as a child. Tagah teaches Aang without hesitation and embraces him as a brother.

With the help of a legendary staff once wielded by an ancient Airbender Avatar, Tagah believes he can restore airbending to the world and rebuild their people. It’s easy to understand why Aang wants to trust him, even as Katara and the rest of Team Avatar become increasingly suspicious. Aang never thought bringing the airbenders back was possible, yet through Tagah he finds hope.

Unlike the pacifists of Aang’s era, Tagah quickly reveals himself as a brutal Air Nomad who’s embraced strength, ruthlessness, and vengeance. He’s a perfect foil to Aang. Remember that rather than kill Fire Lord Ozai, Aang instead removed his bending ability. Tagah shows Aang what he might become should he ever let grief truly consume him.

Their conflict is more compelling than a straightforward battle between good and evil because Aang fully supports Tagah’s goals, but he can never justify causing harm to others to achieve them. As the Avatar, Aang’s duty transcends his desires as an Air Nomad, and seeing him grapple with this internal struggle in a mature way is satisfying.

If I have a complaint about Avatar Aang, it’s how the movie characterizes Katara. Aang somewhat secretly pined after her for nearly the entire original series, and their attraction finally became a relationship after the war. We know from The Legend of Korra that they eventually married and had children, with Aang dying at a relatively young age. Yet here, Katara seems to have lost some of her personality, reduced largely to a doting girlfriend who blindly trusts Aang even when she has every reason to challenge him.

It’s a frustrating treatment of one of the original show’s fiercest characters, particularly in a movie so interested in how adulthood has changed everyone else. The first half can also feel a little slow, especially during a detour into the Spirit World. But once Tagah fully reveals himself and the true power of the staff becomes clear, Avatar Aang rarely lets up.

Though Aang cannot resurrect the people he lost, he also cannot build a new Air Nation by abandoning the ideals that defined the old one. What he can do is ensure their traditions, teachings, and memories survive through the people willing to carry them forward. We already know from The Legend of Korra that the Air Nation will eventually return. Avatar Aang makes that future more meaningful by letting Aang earn it for his people.

It’s a shame that the leaks essentially destroyed Avatar Aang’s potential as a major theatrical release — even if Paramount somewhat cynically released it in a handful of theaters to secure an award-season campaign — but its immediate success on streaming makes one thing clear: We never gave up on Aang. All these years later, Avatar Aang proves his story still had somewhere meaningful to go.
