'The Witcher 3' New DLC Gameplay Trailer Marks The End of an Era For The Epic RPG
CD Projekt Red gave fans a tease of what to expect from Witcher 3 DLC, Songs From The Past
After announcing a new remastered version of the game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red gave fans a better look at the iconic RPG's upcoming DLC at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase. Songs of the Past is The Witcher 3's last hurrah — and an end to a spectacular 11-year run.
The new trailer teased a few of the mythical creatures that Geralt will hunt, as well as the new weapons he'll use to dispose of them. Geralt has new toys, including a hookshot-like weapon that harks back to the first game in the trilogy. To get folks ready for the new DLC, both of the RPG's major expansions are now totally free to play. The developers also said that Songs of the Past is Geralt's last adventure before passing on the torch to Ciri. The hope is that the last DLC will ensure that Geralt goes out with a bang.
The DLC will take place in an entirely new region full of new quests and monsters, the developers tease. There's a dark secret lurking underneath the secret, which, naturally, Geralt will uncover. There still isn't a specific release date for Songs of the Past, unfortunately.
Originally released in 2015, The Witcher 3 defined a generation of RPGs with its rich world and gruff monster hunter, Geralt. Over the years, the open-world game received 16 pieces of DLC and two massive expansions. As it exists now, there's enough content in The Witcher 3 to fill up hundreds of hours — if not multiple years' worth of play once you factor in mods. The last major DLC, Blood and Wine, came out all the way back in 2016. The game has since been ported to newer platforms with next-gen upgrades, but for the most part, fans believed The Witcher 3 and its 65 million sold copies had run its course.
What should The Witcher 3 fans expect from Songs of the Past?
CD Projekt Red therefore surprised everyone in early 2026 by announcing that, despite its active work on The Witcher 4, the developer was putting together a new DLC for its lauded RPG. The developer has said that Songs of the Past is about as big as Blood and Wine, a hefty expansion that takes dozens of hours to complete. Though both projects are happening in tandem, fans shouldn't expect this DLC to be a table setter for The Witcher 4, CD Projekt Red has warned. The developers haven't shared many details on the project until now, aside from the fact that it will introduce even more cards to its Gwent minigame.
We've seen a bit of The Witcher 4 and its impressive Unreal Engine 5 graphics, but the Ciri-led sequel has also largely been shrouded in mystery. Mostly, CD Projekt Red seems intent on pushing out as much Witcher content as possible. Beyond the fifth and final Netflix adaptation of The Witcher, the developer has said that it wants to release an entire Witcher trilogy within a six-year window. The sequel is expected to be the biggest game the studio has ever produced.
The studio has undergone a massive transformation since the 2015 release of The Witcher 3, thanks to some key departures among leadership as well as an extensive expansion. Hopefully, both the DLC and sequel will retain everything that made The Witcher series so special to fans.
