5 Cozy Horror Books to Read This Fall That Are Perfect From Start to Finish
Curl up with these oddly-comforting horror stories
Autumn feels cozy and nostalgic, even as the spooky season rolls in. Horror can be an unlikely source of comfort during colder months, and cozy horror books are no exception. Although the definition of “cozy” can be subjective, these books usually balance their frightening elements with low-stakes events and (mostly) happy endings.
These stories might also lean into childhood nostalgia (think literally any Goosebumps book) or the familiar setting of a small town. Some are lighthearted and comedic; others soften their scares with pleasant elements, dark humor, or wit. Here are five of the best cozy horror books to read this fall.
1 We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962) by Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson’s books aren’t traditionally synonymous with cozy horror, but We Have Always Lived in the Castle inspires this sentiment. Even so, the subject matter is grim. Mary Katherine Blackwood lives with her agoraphobic sister Constance and sick uncle Julian inside a huge mansion that is isolated from the village community. The horror lies in the gradual escalation of a “us against the world” mentality, where the characters take refuge in this secluded setting instead of confronting their flaws or seeking help from the world outside. The estate itself feels both eerie and comforting, thanks to the familiar routines that Constance and her sister obsessively follow every day.
This quiet rhythm makes Jackson’s writing feel vastly different from The Haunting of Hill House, which takes on a more outwardly disturbing approach to Hill House as a sentient entity. In this book, the monster isn’t a ruined mansion or a specter. Instead, it is the people who have inadvertently forced these characters to fortify themselves inside four walls with their incessant hostility. The cozy bubble created by the first half of the novel suddenly bursts, creating a satisfying subversion that makes you question everything you know about the Blackwood family.
2 Mieruko-chan (2018) by Tomoki Izumi
There’s no dearth of cozy horror manga, but Tomoki Izumi’s Mieruko-chan embraces the best aspects of the category. Although the story features grotesque monsters, the warmth stems from the slice-of-life elements of high school life. Miko Yotsuya looks like an average high school kid, but she has the ability to see the most frightening ghosts that haunt people around her. Determined to enjoy high school like her peers, Miko does her best to ignore these threats, but is often dragged into genuinely terrifying scenarios.
Mieruko-chan is for anyone who likes stories that contrast the mundane and the macabre. An important aspect of adolescence is social perception and relatability, which is why Miko desperately wants to “fit in” and live a predictable life, just like her friends. Unfortunately, her gift makes that impossible, even when she completely ignores an eldritch entity lurking in the shadows while she is shopping at the supermarket. These shenanigans are darkly comic in nature, balanced out with wholesome friendships with characters like Hana and Yuria. Although Miko is rightfully terrified of the creatures, the stakes aren’t too serious within the framework of the story.
3 Cackle (2021) by Rachel Harrison
Rachel Harrison’s Cackle is considered horror because it features a character who is a witch, but it’s mostly fantasy and magical realism of the comforting kind. Perfectly capturing the small-town autumnal horror aesthetic, Cackle follows Annie, who wants to have a fresh start in a small village after her boyfriend unceremoniously breaks up with her. Although the townsfolk are helpful and warm, they seem frightened by Sophie, a local witch who expresses her interest in being friends with Annie.
Sophie’s lifestyle is a bit spooky, as she lives in the middle of the woods and seems to hide some sort of mystical power. Annie, however, is drawn to Sophie’s unapologetic nature, subconsciously wanting to be more outspoken like her. The stakes in the book are pretty low, even though Annie embarks on a difficult journey of self-discovery after a painful separation that offered no emotional closure. The horror mostly manifests as witchcraft-related mischief and quirky animal companions that make Annie’s life more interesting. Cackle is the definition of cozy horror, although it is closer in tone to Practical Magic than Coraline.
4 Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962) by Ray Bradbury
Ray Bradbury has dabbled in a variety of genres, including realistic fiction, but Something Wicked This Way Comes is a dark fantasy horror that evokes a special kind of nostalgia. The book follows teenage best friends Jim Nightshade and William Halloway, and their frightening experience with a traveling carnival that visits their town. The supernatural dread is undoubtedly spooky, as the midnight carnival creates an oppressively evil atmosphere, but this aspect isn’t too spooky. Expect classic tropes associated with haunted carnivals, such as a nightmarish hall of mirrors and Mr. Dark, who is the personification of evil.
The coziness of Something Wicked This Way Comes lies in its idyllic setting, where the kids are eagerly awaiting Halloween. The town’s communal spaces offer a sense of safety, which is contrasted against the carnival’s eerie grounds, making the space feel otherworldly. This is also a heartwarming coming-of-age tale about two children who are afraid of growing up. Childhood, no matter how bittersweet, feels irreplaceably golden in comparison to the unknown future. In the end, optimism and hope overcome evil, allowing the characters (and the reader) to ease back into a sense of comfort and joy.
5 My Best Friend's Exorcism (2016) by Grady Hendrix
Another coming-of-age horror book about growing pains, My Best Friend's Exorcism is comforting due to its 1980s setting. The lives of teenagers Abby Rivers and Gretchen Lang are steeped in ‘80s pop culture references, including massive roller-skating parties during autumn and obsession with alien media (like E.T.-themed birthday parties). The book delves into the minutiae of Abby and Gretchen’s friendships, which include the mundanity of growing up in a small town. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse when Gretchen disappears in the woods and returns while exhibiting symptoms of demonic possession.
Writer Grady Hendrix takes the campy route to flesh out the scares in My Best Friend's Exorcism, which parodies the Satanic Panic and playfully subverts tropes connected to high school horror stories. Although the tone is somewhat lighthearted, Hendrix turns this spooky tale into a somber meditation on growing up and what that might mean for these characters. Not everyone wants to leave behind the safety of a town that genuinely feels like home. Growing up might also mean risking childhood bonds that people inevitably outgrow. My Best Friend's Exorcism explores these uncomfortable feelings in a way that feels rewarding.
