D&D's New Hardcore Setting Fixes the Game's Most Iconic Monster
In Athas, dragons aren't born, they're made
If you are a Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Master, it’s very likely that, at one point, you’ve either put a dragon in one of your games or at least considered it. It’s right there in the title, after all. But have you ever stopped to think of how you could actually make this interesting for your players? Because the truth is that dragons are kind of boring.
That’s the problem with iconic monsters: they’re everywhere. Dragons are one of the foundations of the western fantasy genre, and it’s fair to say that they have lost some of their mystique. D&D actually does a good job of keeping them interesting, with the different varieties offering more options for DMs, but at the end of the day, a dragon is still a dragon. A big, scary monster that flies, breathes some kind of deadly substance, and likes shiny things. Except in one place: Athas, the world where the Dark Sun setting takes place.
During Gen Con 2026, D&D shared many exciting news with its fans. One of them was the return of one of the most fascinating settings in the game’s long history: the brutal Dark Sun, a “Mad Max meets grimdark” world ravaged by deadly magic where survivors fight for their freedom against godlike wizard tyrants. And of course, there’s no shortage of monsters to be found.
In Athas, dragons are extremely rare — as they should be. One of the most important characters in Dark Sun is Borys of Ebe, also known as The Dragon, because he’s the only one in the entire world. In Athas, dragons aren’t born. They are made.
Athasian dragons are the result of a long and painful metamorphosis process that only the most powerful and evil spellcasters can undergo. The Sorcerer-Kings are the most famous example of this process. These wizards rule over the city-states found throughout the wasteland of Athas. They’re tyrants who wield deadly magic, whose ultimate goal is to ascend to dragonhood by going through the steps of dragon metamorphosis. Luckily for the world's inhabitants, the process takes centuries, and most Sorcerer-Kings go mad or are killed before achieving their goal.
Borys is the only exception because he was allowed to cheat. Dark Sun’s lore is complex and fascinating, but it mostly revolves around a godlike being known as Rajaat, who wanted to eradicate all species from the world except the halflings (whom he believed to be the true masters of Athas). Rajaat tricked 15 humans into becoming his “Champions,” giving them the duty to eradicate the “lesser species.” The Champions believed humans would inherit the world, but when they learned the truth, they rebelled against Rajaat and imprisoned him in another plane of existence.
However, the Champions needed a guardian powerful enough to keep watch over their former master, so they channeled their powers into Borys, completing his dragon metamorphosis. Borys gained immense powers, but he also went mad in the process, rampaging across Athas for a century.
Borys eventually recovered and moved on to become the ruler of the city of Ur Draxa, but the memory of the devastation he brought to the world is so vivid that anytime one of the Sorcerer-Kings approaches the final stage of dragon metamorphosis, the others band together to kill them. Fittingly for such malicious creatures, the Sorcerer-Kings’ ambition locks them in an endless struggle that only brings them closer to madness at every step.
However, their rarity and the connection with the Sorcerer-Kings aren’t the only things that make Dark Sun dragons interesting. Unlike in other D&D settings, there are no good dragons here. Athasian dragons are the apex of the Defiler path, a term used to describe wizards who wield destructive magical power without caring for its effect on the world.
In Dark Sun, magic is connected to the environment: The use of arcane powers comes at the cost of leeching away life from the world. Defilers are magic-wielders who put their greed and desires above everything else, not caring about the effect their magic has on the environment. (If that reminds you of some evil corporate owners from the real world, that’s by design.) With their treasure hoards and inflated sense of self, dragons are the ultimate personification of the Defiler path. In fact, the rituals needed to transform into a dragon require numerous sacrifices and immense destruction at every step.
In classic Western folklore, dragons were used to represent the greed and malice within humans. J.R.R. Tolkien took this archetype and transported it to the modern age with his depiction of Smaug in The Hobbit. In the early days of D&D, dragons were the stereotypical ultimate guardians of treasure, but while the lore of this monster expanded, so did its presence in the game, making it a bit of a cliché. Fighting a dragon can still be a memorable experience for any party, and there’s nothing wrong with the classics, but a good DM should also think of how to spice things up at their table.
Dark Sun’s dragons are a perfect example of how to do that. The monster is iconic because it’s incredibly rare, and its existence is tied to the very nature of the world. The best monsters, in D&D and in any form of fiction, are never just an array of fangs, claws, and other deadly features. They always represent something, a twisted part of human nature that we’re not ready to confront. As monsters are such a commonplace occurrence in D&D gameplay, it's hard to keep them “meaningful,” but that doesn’t mean you should give up as a DM. Occasionally you’ll need simple fodder to throw at your players, but if you want to make things truly interesting, you should think of what a monster means in your game. Here’s another great example.
In most D&D settings, dragons are merely monsters that stand at the top of the food chain. They’re bigger, stronger, and their high intelligence lets them play the role of mastermind villains. However, they’ve inevitably lost some of their mystique due to overexposure and overproliferation. (Seriously, how many varieties of dragons do we need? These are not ice cream flavors!) But in Dark Sun, that’s not the case. Be it Borys or another Sorcerer-King that obtained the ultimate prize in your campaign, players know that, if they meet a dragon, they’re facing a personification of the evil and destructive impulses that dwell within every heart, including their own.
