GTA 6's New Reputation System Changes Everything About Playing the Game

Rockstar is evolving the Honor and Fame formula from RDR2 for GTA 6

Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking a page out of Red Dead Redemption's playbook with a revamped honor system. The new mechanic, which was teased by the massive GTA 6 leaks over the last several days, takes note of how players progress through the game. Unlike Rockstar's previous implementation of the honor system, the GTA 6 version presents fans with a more complex system of actions and consequences.

Fans may have noticed that, in leaked gameplay footage, a devil-face emoji with a minus appeared when Jason beats up an NPC. That emoji transformed into an unhappy yellow face emoji as the fight progressed. Leaked footage also shows NPCs reacting to Jason as he went about town, with one background character remarking, "Oh, that's him."

According to an IGN preview of the game, Jason and Lucia have a criminal profile as well as a Wanted level. Your profile can be affected by small actions, like throwing trash in a garbage can or feeding animals. The game won't penalize you for responding to situations appropriately: if someone is shooting at you, GTA 6 won't ding you for shooting back. If you turn a chilling situation into a violent one, it's a different matter altogether.

Police who see you committing a crime will pay attention to what you look like, what car you're driving, and if you're breaking the law with an accomplice. Changing any of these details, like your attire, can help players get away from danger quickly.

The delineation between honor and criminal profile is reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption's fame system, which worked independently of the honor mechanic. In RDR, fame could impact things like the availability of ambient challenges, the cost of bribes, and how harshly the authorities treated the protagonist. Unlike honor, fame could only increase. It is not yet clear if GTA 6 will offer similar mechanics, but IGN's preview does say that your actions in the game impact how the narrative plays out.

NPCs react to you dynamically now as well, rather than immediately becoming angry at you for looking at them. The new dialogue system allows you to talk to or taunt characters, and they'll respond depending on what you look like and whether you're packing heat. If you taunt an NPC, they could respond in kind or cower in fear. If things turn violent, other parties altogether might get pulled into your mess.

An early preview of GTA 6 noted that characters will be able to scroll through social media feeds, and that posts on these in-game apps could go viral. According to retailer descriptions of the game from earlier this year, keeping track of these feeds can unlock secret side missions around Leonida. Conversely, NPCs witnessing crimes can record the incidents. This is an evolution of the NPC system in Grand Theft Auto 5, where NPCs with cell phones could alert authorities to your actions.

Another wrinkle to GTA 6's new honor system is the open-world game's deep relationship mechanics. Jason and Lucia are a couple, and that will be present throughout the story. Interacting with each other outside those segments is totally optional. If you do want to engage, though, you can check in with each other via text, hold hands, shop together, and even hold the door for one another.

You can't break up, but you can temporarily separate during a heist to throw off the cops. If one of the two starts an altercation with an NPC, their counterpart will get involved. While there are no gameplay benefits to going on dates, Rockstar says that the strength of Jason and Lucia's bond has some sort of impact on how the overall story plays out. This doesn't necessarily mean that keeping the romance alive ensures a good ending, however.

Coupled with GTA 6's fancy new dialogue system, Rockstar's take on morality will keep players on their toes.
