Why StarCraft Isn't Coming Back Until 2030

StarCraft has been in the works for at least 4 years — what's 4 more?

Blizzard Entertainment announced a brand-new StarCraft game at BlizzCon 2026 this weekend, a reveal that came with two big surprises: It's an open-world shooter — not a real-time strategy game — and it won't be out until 2030. While the official return of StarCraft was met with great excitement, the far-off release date was a shock to fans. Blizzard does not have a habit of announcing far-off release windows, nor does it have the best reputation for sticking to announced release dates.

But Dan Hay, general manager and vice president at Blizzard Entertainment, says there are good reasons for announcing StarCraft four years before it comes out. Committing to a release date makes StarCraft a more tangible thing, he told Polygon during an interview at BlizzCon, and it brings fans into the conversation.

Hay said that making a new StarCraft has been a longtime dream of his, and in 2022, he finally got that chance after Blizzard reached out to him to discuss a new game in the franchise. While many details about the new StarCraft are being kept under wraps for obvious reasons, Hay talked more about Blizzard's plans for the open-world shooter and his history with the sci-fi saga. Read on for our interview with Hay.

Polygon: You announced StarCraft for 2030. Why so far out and why announce it now?

Hay: I get the desire for more color. You walk a funny line when you start talking about when you announce a game, right?

We know how long it takes to make some of these games, and we know that we want to be able to put a date [on it]. When you're making something like this, I like the clarity of the date. I like it because it's the clarifying agent in the discussion. Because you can pontificate on things and wax on things and say that you're gonna make a thing and do a bunch of stuff. But the date makes it very real. It says, "All right, let's reduce, let's focus, and let's go." So I like the date. In terms of the relationship with the date when we show everybody stuff, it’s a little bit different from the standpoint of the moment that you feel like you have something and that you can play it and that it's real. It feels like you've got an identity for what you're making

Once you've got a vision and the team is all rowing in the same direction, you think: It's ready to get a sense of what the public might feel. We’re ready to get feedback. We've been sitting on it for a little while and working on it and it was timing. It just felt right. So I get the question of "There's four years [to go]?" It takes a while to get these things right. There's the right time to show people and make sure that you get feedback. I'm being honest and sincere when I say that we want that feedback. We understand the importance of people who played the originals and that it was something incredibly special to them.

So we're gonna need the time to do it right, but we also wanna be able to show and say, "What do you think?" Yesterday, literally showing a teaser, hopefully it wasn't too on the nose that we were literally in a barracks going down onto the ground and then putting you into that view and then showing the door open and then having you be in an onslaught by Zerg.

But we felt like people loved it. We felt like we got a lot of great feedback in terms of tone, identity, some of the themes that we're starting to touch at, some of the ideas of the factions that are out there — hints of the Protoss, definitely the whole Zerg swarm coming at you.

I did want to talk about the tone because the teaser trailer did have this kind of black humor, but it also felt very political in a way that StarCraft can be. So I’m curious what you wanted to communicate with that trailer beyond ‘We're making Starcraft.’

When I look at what I loved about StarCraft when I first saw it — and when I was talking [on stage] about the first cinematic that I'd seen, I was talking about a StarCraft cinematic — StarCraft has this wonderful thing where it’s interstellar space Western, where factions are fighting over resources. The villains that are in it are being surreptitious, being very quiet about what they're actually doing: Slowly boiling the water to gain control. It's about control. It's about dogma. It's about politick. It's about wooing people to a certain way of thinking and then maintaining control. There was something interesting about that. And then it was about resources and the asymmetry of these different factions who deal with things in different ways.

The Zerg, they really can't be reasoned with. In some ways they feel like they're like the future. They’re coming; you just gotta deal with it. The Protoss in some ways feel like they're the past. They're stoic, they're regal. They don't necessarily move that quickly from the standpoint of how they think in terms of what they do. Then the Terrans are kind of working their way through everything, trying to figure it out, because they're us — imperfect. So I felt like when I played StarCraft and experienced that asymmetry in terms of what people were thinking, and there were villains who were attempting to control things. It felt very similar to some of what we feel now.

What was it about StarCraft that you think resonated with you so much at the time?

It was the asymmetry, the factions. The characters too. The stories. I really liked that first StarCraft story of Mengsk. I love villains. They're the most fun to write. A lot of the time, their logic is flawed, but their ideals or their intent has purpose. Then, just the simplicity and the clarity of the story of somebody who wants control and they're vying for it. And there are only so many chess pieces on the chessboard and there are only so many moves to make them.

So the story is from the Terrans’ perspective?

That's what we're talking about now. That’s our focus.

Was there any particular unit or technology in StarCraft that really blew your mind?

The easy answer is that it’s very cool what the Protoss can do. But I remember the Zerg, being able to see the organic nature of where a monster sleeps, what it does, how it works. There's something terrifying about the Hive and the idea of the singular mind that has, not even doctrine, just sheer force of will. They're scary, right? When you're younger and you run into that stuff, you're like, "How do I manage that? How do I deal with it?" And they just seem to be relentless. They end up becoming like this allegory, this feeling that something's coming that you just can't negotiate with.

The older you get, the more you realize that that's a common theme.

Humor's also a pretty important component of StarCraft, and I'm wondering how much you think about that part of it. What you showed yesterday was both very grim; they're just sending meat into the grinder.

It's super important, because it can't all just be one note. One of my favorite shows is Deadwood, because I love the fact that there's a place for humor in that show. It's dark humor, and there are moments where they’re together [with dramatic storytelling]. One of the things that was great about the original StarCraft was that there were great moments of humor. There are great moments of camaraderie and there's real emotion.

I have the benefit of knowing some of the characters that we're building. You need those great Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-type characters against the Hamlet.
