Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action Movie Officially Announced
CD Projekt Red and Paramount Pictures are bringing Nighty City to the big screen
Johnny Silverhand is heading for the silver screen. CD Projekt Red's sci-fi role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 is being adapted into a live-action movie at Paramount Pictures, according to a new report, with the longtime producer of the Transformers series overseeing the project. It's the latest video game adaptation from Paramount, which is also bringing Street Fighter and Call of Duty to live-action.
According to Deadline, Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce the movie alongside CD Projekt Red. Di Bonaventura is also working on a new Transformers live-action movie with Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay.
"We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise," said Michał Nowakowski, joint-CEO of CD Projekt, in a statement. "We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time."
Further info on the live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie adaptation, including who will write, direct, and star in the film, weren't announced. But you know who'd be a good live-action Johnny Silverhand? Keanu Reeves. Just an idea!
Cyberpunk 2077 is ripe for adaptation
The futuristic sci-fi story of Cyberpunk 2077 is centered on the mercenary V, who accepts a job to steal a one-of-a-kind implant said to be the key to immortality. V is imbued with a cybernetic biochip that contains the memory and personality of legendary rock star (and terrorist) Johnny Silverhand, and the two are forced to work together to save V's life. The game's backdrop is the stylized and dystopian Night City, which is run by the powerful Arasaka Corporation.
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 — more than eight years after its original announcement — in an infamously dire state. In the following years, CD Projekt Red vastly improved upon the game, making it a fan favorite and delivering on the franchise's original cyberpunk vision. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies, according to Nowakowski. The developer released an expansion, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, in 2025.
CD Projekt and Japanese animation studio Trigger have already adapted the world of Cyberpunk 2077 into an animated series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which began streaming on Netflix in 2022. A stand-alone sequel series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, is slated to premiere on Netflix on Oct. 20.
A video game sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in 2022 under the working title Project Orion. In May 2025, CD Projekt announced that the sequel, now known as Cyberpunk 2, had entered pre-production. Cyberpunk 2 does not have an announced release date.
