The Best Street Fighter Anime You've Never Seen

The latest Street Fighter movie is hurricane-kicking its way into theaters on October 16 — but did you know there was a critically acclaimed animated film that came out decades before it?

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie came out in 1994, the same year that the so-bad-it's-good live-action film with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia was released. And while the highly-quotable (“For me, it was Tuesday”) live-action flick is a larger part of the public consciousness, most Street Fighter fans will agree that the animated movie blows it out of the water.

The animated movie doesn’t follow the World Warrior tournament seen in the game; instead, it focuses on Bison tracking down strong warriors using an army of cyborgs in an attempt to capture them for his own nefarious purposes. It’s not an official part of the official Street Fighter lore (which, admittedly, is quite confusing and convoluted), but it features some fantastic fights and, of course, the debut of Violent Ken (an evil version of the character corrupted by M. Bison's Psycho Power).

You’ve likely seen some GIFs from this movie floating around the internet over the years, and that’s no coincidence. The animation in this flick is simply fantastic, especially where fight scenes are concerned. One of the first ones we see takes place between Ryu and Sagat as a little backstory (which actually is canon); other iconic action sequences include Cammy’s assassination of a government official, Ryu and Ken’s final fight against M. Bison, and of course, Chun-Li’s iconic brawl with Vega.

Fights aside, one of the reasons the animated movie is so deeply beloved by fans is that it stays true to Street Fighter’s colorful cast of characters. Just like in the games, Ryu is a deeply contemplative, compassionate man on a perpetual journey of self-improvement; Ken is decidedly more hot-headed but maintains an aura of discipline learned from master Gouken; Guile is a classic American military man whose stoic facade breaks into goofy moments now and then; Chun-Li is a badass kung-fu practitioner who manages to keep hold of her girlish, quirky side; and Bison is a menacing, gangster overlord whose Psycho Power makes him feel like a serious threat.

Given it was the '90s, this version of Street Fighter doesn’t shy away from blood and nudity. In fact, there’s a fairly gratuitous shower scene that highlights Chun-Li’s physique, directly after which she tousles with Vega in a brutal, bloody battle. It’s not a family-friendly film, but it’s possibly the most accurate depiction of what the Street Fighter universe would actually be like if psycho-powered dictators and super-powered martial artists actually roamed the world.

Since it's an animated movie, it's also easier to sell the believability of its overall premise. Live-action adaptations have the challenge of making larger-than-life moves like E. Honda's Sumo Headbutt or Chun-Li's Spinning Bird Kick look realistic enough to fit into the real world; animated movies have the luxury of getting to bypass this, giving artists far more creative freedom in translating these moments from concept to page. This is one of the key reasons why the Street Fighter II animated movie pulls things off so well, and it set the standard for other adaptations in the years to come.

It'd be remiss not to mention the other animated Street Fighter films and series that exist, as well. The Street Fighter Alpha animated movie is a visual spectacle that unfortunately falls flat where story is concerned; the Street Fighter II V anime series is painful to watch, and we won't even get into the mess that was the American cartoon (though it also has some pretty quotable moments). It's clear, though, that the 1994 animated movie is the one to watch out of the lot, and as a diehard Street Fighter fan, I'd argue that it's required viewing if you're trying to get into the franchise.

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is available to watch on Crunchyroll, Pluto TV, and Amazon Prime Video at the time of writing this piece. It’s absolutely worth viewing, especially if you’re wanting to learn more about the world of the games ahead of the 2026 movie (or if you just want some badass anime fights).
